Multiple Tooth Implant Portland, OR
Having missing teeth, whether one tooth, or many, can create several problems. The gap in your mouth can cause not only a shifting of teeth, but the empty space makes room for bacteria to grow and develop, thus increasing the risk for both tooth decay and cavities. Missing teeth cause pain and discomfort while eating, and make speaking challenging. Fortunately, there are several multiple tooth implant restoration options so that you do not have to continue on without a full set of teeth. One of the restorative dentistry services that we specialize in and provide for our patients here at Portland City Dental is dental implants.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants serve as the missing tooth root. They are surgically embedded into your jawbone. The implant, usually made out of titanium, will fuse with your jawbone. This process, called osseointegration, occurs over a period of several months. After your jawbone has healed, you will come back into our office to have the rest of the dental implant placed. If you are missing a single tooth, you will have a single tooth implant placed. If you are missing several, or all of your teeth are missing, you will receive a multiple tooth implant.
What Are the Different Types of Dental Implants?
There are a variety of multiple tooth implants available if you need to replace several, or all of your missing teeth. These include the implant-supported denture, implant-supported bridge, and the All-on-4® Treatment Concept.
Implant-Supported Denture
Unlike traditional full dentures, which are subject to slippage and falling out, an implant-supported denture is attached securely to the dental implant. There are typically two to six dental implants placed. The implant-supported denture is still removable.
Implant-Supported Bridge
If you have several teeth missing in a row, an implant-supported bridge may be the solution for you. Rather than having your natural teeth on either side of the tooth gap to support the bridge, an implant-supported bridge can be inserted at each side of the gap to support the dental bridge. With an implant-supported bridge, there is no need to shave down the neighboring teeth, as is the case with dental crowns.
All-on-4 Treatment Concept With the All-on-4 Treatment Concept, you will receive four dental implants, instead of the usual six to eight dental implants in a full dental implant placement. Two implants are placed at the front of the mouth and two implants are placed at the back of the mouth.
Benefits of Dental Implants
There are many benefits to multiple tooth dental implants. One of the most prevalent benefits is that dental implants support your jawbone. When we have missing teeth, our jawbone begins to atrophy, weaken, and deteriorate. With dental implants there to support your jawbone, you retain a strong and healthy bite force, jaw and mouth. This aids in your oral health, aesthetics, chewing, and speaking abilities.
