Dental Bridges - Dental Restorations Solution for Saving Your Tooth

Missing a tooth can create a host of oral health issues for you starting with a change in your appearance due to the gap in your smile. It can also lead to problems such as tooth misalignments (due to shifting of the teeth), change in the bite, speech impairment, increased risk of tooth damage, TMJ problems, and more. Fortunately, you there are several dental solutions that are available to replace the missing tooth, which is where we, at Portland City Dental, come in. We offer several tooth restoration solutions, including dental bridges, which can be an ideal solution when replacing one or more missing teeth.

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a tooth replacement device that features artificial, but natural looking tooth/teeth used to replace the missing ones. It is used to replace the missing teeth by connecting them to the adjacent natural teeth. This is achieved by using snap wires or dental crowns, which are attached to the adjacent natural teeth, thus providing a firm support structure. Due to this working mechanism, a dental bridge is usually used to replace a single tooth or several missing ones that are in a row.

What Are the Benefits of Getting a Dental Bridge?

There are several benefits to getting a dental bridge to replace your missing tooth/teeth. These include:
•  It fixes the gap in your smile, greatly improving your appearance.
•  It prevents the damage of the adjacent natural teeth - which can happen due to loose support following a missing tooth.
•  It prevents the shifting of the remaining teeth, which can lead to misalignment issues.
•  It helps to prevent any complications to the jaw - a common consequence of a missing tooth.
•  It restores your full oral function, allowing you to talk, eat, and laugh with ease.
•  It helps to preserve your bite.
•  It reduces the risk of dental problems such as tooth decay, and excessive wear and tear of your teeth.

The Dental Bridge Procedure

A dental bridge procedure typically requires two dental visits. During the first visit, the natural teeth used to support the bridge are prepared by removing a part of the enamel to allow for the placement of the crown, or bonding, between the natural and anchor teeth. In the event of an implant supported bridge, dental implants are inserted. However, the dental implant placement is a long process that lasts for more than a visit.

Still, on the first visit, a dental impression is taken and sent to the dental lab to allow for the creation of a custom bridge. A temporary bridge is then placed, thus helping to restore some functionality and appearance as you wait for the placement of the custom one.

During the second visit, the temporary bridge is removed, and the custom one placed. A bit of adjusting may be required to guarantee a perfect fit. Once this happens, a dental cement is used to secure the bridge to the adjacent natural teeth. In the case of an implant supported bridge, the bridge is screwed onto the dental implants.

Additional visits may be required to check on the progress of the dental bridge.
